Giants Fans Need to Calm Down

Giant’s fans are going crazy right now. They have a right to go crazy, their team is an absolute dumpster fire this season. I remember hearing some commentators saying at the start of the season that the Giants could win the NFC East and the Redskins would be dead last. They were strongly thinking that OBJ and Saquon Barkley would propel this team to championship contenders. That, obviously, hasn’t happened. The Giants are now even struggling to tank correctly, they won last night and are basically handing the number one pick to the Raiders.

Fans of the Giants are going crazy over this abysmal season. I would be pretty upset if my favorite team was this bad, too. But they’ve gotten a bit ridiculous with it.

The favorite scapegoat of this season is Eli Manning. Giants fans seem to think they would be contenders if they had a decent Quarterback. They can’t blame the run game, Saquon is phenomenal. They can’t blame the receiving core, OBJ is one of the best in the game (or so I’ve been told, I don’t believe that). Who else is there to blame? Good ole Eli.

Some of the Eli hate has been unfair. He isn’t that bad. He’s not Nathan Peterman. He’s still got skills. It probably is time for him to retire, but he’s still capable of winning games. It’s not his skill level that I’m really interested in here, though. I think Giant’s fans are stupid for wanting to cut Eli. Not because he’s a great QB, but because heĀ was a great QB.

This may sound stupid, and I get that, but I’ve been a Redskins fan my entire life. Do you know how often the Redskins have been in the Super Bowl in my lifetime? Exactly 0. Do you know how often the Redskins have been legitimate shots to make it to a Super Bowl since I’ve been following them? Exactly 0. Do you know how many times the Redskins have won the division since 2000? Twice. Do you know how many times they’ve been last in the division since 2000? Six. Six times. Do you know how many years it has been since the Redskins have won a playoff game? 12 years.

If a Quarterback comes to the Redskins and we win a Super Bowl with him, he can play for the Redskins until he is 75 years old and I’ll cheer him on. He got me a Super Bowl, he can play for my team as long as he wants, no matter how bad he becomes. Eli has given the Giants TWO super bowls. TWO! As a fan of a historically bad team, I will take five-seven years of poor play post-Super Bowl just for the chance to win two. Not only that, Eli won two Super Bowls against the Patriots! Eli made Tom Brady cry! This makes him a legend to me, and I’m a fan of a team that is the Giants divisional rival!

Eli has earned the right to play for the Giants as long as his little heart wants. He has earned respect. Giants fans aren’t giving him that respect and it is frustrating to see. The Redskins haven’t had a Super Bowl-winning quarterback on our roster since Donovan McNabb in 2010. If we had one, I would love that dude and want him to play forever.

We just are so focused on success now we forget how good the previous success felt. It just begs the question: was winning two Super Bowls even worth it? They don’t care that they won back then, they want to win now. That can’t be healthy.
